Amongst the city’s many tourist attractions, Hong Kong’s museums deserve a shout-out. These museums offer a deep insight into the city’s history, art, culture, and science.

With a small city like Hong Kong, you might be surprised to find that there are more options than you think.

In this blog post, I’ll break down the best Hong Kong museums to visit while you’re in the city.

Let’s get started!

Best Museums in Hong Kong List

1) Cup Noodle Museum (CLOSED)

The Cup Noodle Museum is dedicated to the Japanese ramen brand Nissin’s Cup Noodle. Its original location was in Osaka, but it opened a Hong Kong location in Tsim Sha Tsui in 2021.

The team that selected this location conducted thorough research, as it is situated next to Harbour City. Although China Hong Kong City is much smaller than Harbour City, its convenient location makes it easily accessible to tourists.

This museum has three activities to choose from. The first is My CupNoodles Factory, where participants can decorate the outside of their cup noodle and select the soup base and toppings.

Demae Iccho Factory is the most hands-on of the three activities. In this 90-minute session, you’ll learn to make your own noodles by kneading and cutting the dough into long strips.

The last one, My Granola Factory, is similar to My CupNoodles Factory, except it features granola instead of noodles.

These exhibitions, along with the souvenir store, make this a fun place to visit with children and fans of this ramen brand.

2) M+ Museum

This was my favourite display at M+, where 13 elderly, lifelike figures slowly moved around in their wheelchairs.

This museum, located in West Kowloon, is one of the most prominent contemporary art museums in the world. The collections focus on Asia and other international locations.

With over 65,000 square feet of space and 33 galleries, you can spend a whole day in M+. As someone who isn’t particularly into the arts, I was still fascinated by the creativity and several exhibition displays. Walking around here will feel like a maze, as you get lost in all the various types of artworks.

Additionally, rotating exhibitions give the space a fresh look.

Even the view is outstanding, with the museum facing the harbour. People gather around outside the M+ to take pictures and relax with their friends and pets in a communal space.

3) Hong Kong Museum of Art

Another museum by the waterfront is the Hong Kong Museum of Art. This location is more convenient than M+ because it’s in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui on Salisbury Road. Near the Hong Kong Museum of Art, there are also other tourist attractions like the Hong Kong Space Museum and the Avenue of Stars, so that you can hit multiple things at once.

Admire an extensive collection of over 19,000 Chinese antiques, calligraphy, paintings, and other contemporary artworks from a Hong Kong perspective here. The best part is that admission is free!

Due to its prime location, the museum may be more crowded than you would like, but this doesn’t detract from its beauty. There are seven floors in total, so explore the other floors to see which areas aren’t crowded.

4) Hong Kong Heritage Museum

Hong Kong Heritage Museum is a public museum in Sha Tin that focuses on local culture and history.

There is a section that focuses on Bruce Lee, one of the most famous Chinese entertainers of all time. Although he had a tragic ending, visiting the second floor of the Hong Kong Heritage Museum can help you understand why he remains an iconic figure decades later.

The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions featuring other well-known public figures, such as singer Anita Mui and artists in different fields, including Hong Kong Comedy Comics. For the most updated exhibition list, please visit their official website.

5) Hong Kong Palace Museum

Opened in 2022, the Hong Kong Palace Museum, along with M+, is the newest museum on this list. Many historical artifacts and treasures from the Hong Kong Palace Museum are from the Forbidden City in Beijing. Millions of tourists worldwide visit Beijing to see the Forbidden City and the Great Wall of China. If there are no plans to visit Beijing this time around, at least you can catch a glimpse of what some of the displays there would look like.

Visiting this museum enables visitors to gain a deeper understanding of China’s dynasties, including the Ming and Qing Dynasties.

Since M+ and the Palace Museum are close together, a complimentary shuttle bus runs between them.

6) Hong Kong Science Museum

The Hong Kong Science Museum is a recommended destination for families with kids who want a fun and educational activity. With interactive exhibits, it keeps children entertained and engaged. It’s also a fun learning experience. They get to learn new scientific knowledge while playing.

Even adults who aren’t that interested in science will be fascinated with the displays and exhibits. Students have free admission, while adults are charged a small entrance fee of HKD 20. This price is definitely worth it.

You can easily lose a couple of hours exploring the museum.

7) Hong Kong History Museum

After years of renovation, the Hong Kong History Museum finally reopened to the public in 2025. This museum, located next to the Hong Kong Science Museum, is another free attraction for visitors.

Witness the city’s evolution from millions of years ago to modern times as you walk around the spacious exhibits. Visiting different parts of the museum will make you feel as though you’ve been transported back in time.

It’s a must-visit tourist attraction for history lovers.

8) The Hong Kong Maritime Museum

The Hong Kong Maritime Museum has chosen an ideal location along Central’s harbourfront. This museum focuses on maritime content, including history and culture. While it may not be as widely recognized as some other museums on the list, it caters to a more specialized audience, similar to the Space Museum. Although the location remains accessible, it isn’t quite as convenient as the Space Museum’s.

9) Dr. Yat Sen Museum (Temporarily Closed)

Note: Although this museum has been closed since May 2024, it will reopen in the second half of 2025.

For those who don’t know, Sun Yat-sen was the first president of the Republic of China. He played a crucial role in ending the Qing Dynasty and switching to the Republic of China. He spent considerable time in Hong Kong, so this museum focuses on his life and political career. While visiting the Dr. Sun Yat Sen Museum, visitors will gain a thorough understanding of why he’s an influential figure and the contributions he has made to shaping modern China.

10) Hong Kong Space Museum

The Hong Kong Space Museum dedicates its interior space to astronomy and space science. The most remarkable thing about this place is its planetarium, the only one in Hong Kong. For an extra fee, lie back and enjoy the immersive experience while learning about science-related subjects.

While space is a niche subject and not everyone’s cup of tea, the architect was brilliant to design the Hong Kong Space Museum as an egg-shaped dome. The museum’s location near the Tsim Sha Tsui Harbourfront and across from the iconic hotel, The Peninsula, makes it instantly recognizable and draws people’s attention, as these areas are always busy.

The ideal time to visit is Wednesday, as the museum offers free admission that day. It’s also only a few minutes’ walk away from the Hong Kong Art Museum.

11) Madame Tussauds

madame tussauds victoria peak

Madame Tussauds is a global chain of wax museums. In Hong Kong, it is located on Victoria Peak. With more than 100 dolls representing various fields, including singers, actors, and sports stars, you will recognize at least some of these people.

Pose with your favourite entertainers from global superstars like Ariana Grande to Chinese celebrities like Angelababy, Jackson Wang, and Hu Ge.

It’s hard to meet your favourite celebrity, so fulfill your dreams (at least somewhat) by taking pictures with their wax figures. These wax figures are life-sized and resemble the actual person.

12) Hong Kong Railway Museum

Once an old train station in Tai Po, the Hong Kong Railway Museum has revamped the site into a free outdoor museum dedicated to railway history.

Hong Kong Railway Museum has done an excellent job of maintaining its facilities. Museum goers are allowed to roam freely inside the train carriages.

History or train enthusiasts will be interested in seeing how train designs have evolved over the years. You can imagine what life was like back then, as the surrounding area will evoke nostalgia.

Exploring the museum will be quick, as most people stay for under an hour.

Final Thoughts – Best Museums in Hong Kong

Hong Kong houses more museums than you would expect for a compact city. Whether you’re drawn to art, science, or history, there’s a museum that will captivate your interest. There is something for everyone.

Gain historical and cultural knowledge of Hong Kong as you explore these institutions. You’ll learn why Hong Kong is the city it is today, so carve out some time to explore at least one of these on this list!
