If you haven’t already, check out part one of my Top Chinese Romance Dramas.
3) Legend of Yunxi 芸汐传
In Legend of Yunxi, the main actress, Ju Jing Yi (鞠婧祎) who plays Han Yun Xi has an arranged marriage with a Prince, played by Zhang Zhe Han (张哲瀚). Although she has a scar on her face and is considered ‘ugly,’ she is a kind-hearted person that is knowledgeable in medicine (especially poison) and comes from a respectable family.
The plot might not sound that interesting but it’s a light-hearted drama. This actress played the typical good girl character. To my surprise, her acting didn’t annoy me. I’ve noticed that some actresses in drama try too hard. Instead of coming off as sweet and cute, I cringe. There are other actresses where I feel like they’re too good that it’s unrealistic. I didn’t feel this way about Ju Jing Yi. She is my favourite character in the drama.
I always had a hard time reviewing male characters. If an actress isn’t good at her role, I can easily tell but with lead actors in dramas, it’s hard. A lot of them tend to play a standoffish character like Zhang Zhe Han does in this role. He has a cold personality aka the type a lot of fangirls like. I would say Zhang Zhe Han was decent at his character. He had to play a stern character which isn’t easy. I’ve never watch Zhang Zhe Han act before this so I will see how I feel about him as an actor when I watch his other works.
Even though the characters might seem stereotypical, they have good chemistry together. She tends to jump on him a lot which is quite amusing. My focus tends to be on the main couple. There are rarely times where I pay much attention to the side character but shout out to the actor that played the King, Hu Bing. It’s a combination of his face and the makeup team but he suits an evil character really well!
I’m not that surprised that this drama became popular when it first came out in 2018. This drama was based on a novel so this was almost guaranteed a following. Also, Ju Jing Yi was a former girl group member (SNH48) so she probably had a solid fan base already from her singing career. She is known for her beauty. Her fans even call her ‘once in 4000 years idol.’ She has a delicate, feminine look to her that is suitable to play female characters in historical dramas.
The two main leads seemed to have potential but it didn’t seem like they got anywhere? I mean, it got their names out for a little bit and maybe some more recognition but I thought it would get them more famous BUT Ju Jing Yi and Zhang Zhe Han are pairing up for another historical drama and it’s supposed to come out this year! I will for sure be tuning in whenever the release date is. Fans are looking forward to seeing them onscreen together again. Hopefully, this drama will be another hit.
The production team chose nice scenic backgrounds. See above for an example. Costumes were pretty but nothing special. This is a lower budget drama but still captured my attention nonetheless.
4) Three Lives Three Worlds, Ten Miles of Peach Blossom
It is a love story that spans over three lives in three worlds. The title, hello? OOO. I love these types of dramas! Also, this drama is also called Eternal Love.
The first life:
Yang Mi (杨幂) plays Bai Qian, a highly respected goddess of the Fox Clan. She goes undercover as a male called Si Yin in order to be Mark Chao’s (赵又廷), who plays Mo Yuan, disciple. (I freaking LOVE it when a female goes undercover. There’s bound to be funny scenes.)
The second life:
Bai Qian is sent to the mortal realm and is now a human called Su Su. She meets Ye Hua (also played by Mark Chao), the crown prince of the heavenly realm.
The third life:
After jumping off a terrace in heaven (cue in dramatic music, lol), Su Su is now back as Bai Qian. This time around, she forgot her love story with Ye Hua with him trying to get her back.
Why do dramas always have such complicated storylines? Although I admit it is cliché, I love story plots where a character loses his/her memory but falls in love all over again with the other person. They’re meant to be!
Most of the drama focuses on their third life but I wish there were more scenes Si Yin and Mo Yuan. It was such a struggle because I was rooting for them to be together but I also like Ye Hua. Mark Chao, why did you have to act so well to the point I can’t pick between both of your characters? Lol. I never watched any of his work until this. He was famous for his first drama, Black and White back in 2009 but this drama took him to a whole new level of fame.
Yang Mi showed great acting skills here. She played three different characters but she played them each so well. Su Su was more docile whereas Bai Qian was more confident. Si Yin just seemed sad all the time. I used to think she was another actress that is popular for her looks and fan base but has no talent in acting. You know those celebrities I’m talking about. She has for sure improved since Palace (my first Chinese drama). Yang Mi was already an A list, established celebrity when she took on this role but this drama cemented her position in the industry.
Usually, I only focus on the main couple. I find that secondary couples take up unnecessary space in a drama but I love this side couple. Dilaraba Dilmurat (迪丽热巴) plays Bai Qian’s niece, Bai Feng Jiu and is a part of the Fox Clan. Vengo Gao (高伟光) plays Dong Hua Di Jun and is Feng Jiu’s love interest. He is one of the oldest gods in heaven and doesn’t care for much until her. Di Jin saved Feng Jiu one day and she insists on repaying his kindness. Alas, a love story happens.
I found myself re-watching their parts because I couldn’t get over their onscreen interactions. Feng Jiu is a cutesy character and although there seem to be mixed reactions about her character, I think her character is absolutely endearing. I love how unwavering her love is for Di Jun.
The side couple attracted such a large fan base that they ended up reprising their role three years later. I tried watching Three Lives, Three Worlds, The Pillow Book (三生三世枕上书) because I was such a fan of the couple in their parent drama but I couldn’t finish it. The drama was slow and flat. As you could probably guess, this was not as successful as their parent drama.
Can we talk about how amazing the music is? Music is such an important part of a drama. This drama has two of my all-time favourite OST soundtracks. The show premiered in 2017 and even now, I still play the opening theme song (三生三世) and ending theme song (凉凉) all the time. In fact, the ending theme song is on my top 25 most played songs on iTunes. That’s how often I listen to it! Historical dramas always have such pretty-sounding songs because of the use of Chinese instruments.
Three Lives Three Worlds, Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms is a drama that will ALWAYS be my favourite. Everything is visually appealing from its scenic background, the costumes, and the actors. The CGI can seem fake but you can expect heavily edited CGI in these types of dramas. I still re-watch some episodes to this day and I can’t completely move on. There is a reason this drama received critical acclaim and is one of the most-watched television series in China. This is a must-watch!!
If you like Eternal Love, Love and Redemption also has a similar plot line. Another highly recommended drama!
